The other day amidst all the bills and junk mail there was a gem in the mail box. A handwritten letter addressed to me.
I carefully unwrapped the card and read what my dear uncle had written to me. It took me back to a time when I was 8 years old and dressed up in a southern Illinois home preforming a child-like drama for my grandma and uncle as they clapped for me and my sisters in our made up costumes. A time before e-mails and texts when receiving a letter in the mailbox was an event and a long distance phone call was a big deal.
I sat at my kitchen table and realized how much I love getting letters in the mail and how the relationships that really matter are hard to hold onto as life has been speeding by. It also hit me over the head as I was contemplating my new years resolution.
For the past month I have been trying to focus on what I’d like to do differently with the business this year and what I want to grow in. As I thought about is and really evaluated what can work and what can not, I came up with what seems a small thing, but very meaningful. Also a thing that extends to my personal life. And that thing is simple… Relationships.
So my 2011 resolution is not to try to lose weight or save more, but it is to work on those people that I appreciate so much in life both in business and in my personal life.
So here’s to more hand-written letters, long distance phone calls, and a happy 2011.
