Mini Session vs. Petite Session: What’s the Difference and Which is Right for You?

As a photographer who has spent years capturing milestones—from newborn cuddles to senior portraits—I know that choosing the right session type can feel a little overwhelming. If you’ve browsed my booking page recently, you might have noticed two options that seem similar: the Mini Session and the Petite Session. So what’s the difference? And which one is the best fit for your family or season of life?

Let’s break it down so you can confidently choose the session that makes the most sense for you.

What is a Petite Session?

A Petite Session is a short and sweet photography session offered on specific dates at a pre-determined location. These sessions are ideal if you’re looking for a quick refresh on family photos, need a few updated shots of your kids, or want a seasonal snapshot like fall colors or spring blossoms.

Details of a Petite Session:

  • 15-minute session
  • 25-30 high-resolution digital images
  • Set date and location
  • Perfect for: Holiday card photos, seasonal updates, or families with young kids who don’t want a long session

These sessions are offered a few times a year—think spring blooms or peak fall colors. Because they’re quick and at a reduced rate, they fill fast!

What is a Mini Session?

A Mini Session is one you are probably more familiar with and if you have booked with me in the past, the same mini session you are used to. It is still a shorter session than a full one, but it’s longer and more flexible than a petite. These sessions are a bit longer and If you want a bit more time for connection, multiple backgrounds, or a pet, this is your go-to.

Details of a Mini Session:

  • 25-minute session
  • 45-50 high-resolution digital images
  • Pets allowed
  • Perfect for: Maternity photos, couples, milestone sessions, or families wanting a little more time

Mini sessions offer the best of both worlds—more flexibility than a petite, but still simple and efficient if you don’t need a full hour session.

Still not sure? Here’s a little insider tip: if your kids are shy or need time to warm up, or if you’d love a little more variety (like walking, cuddling, laughing together), the Mini is probably your better fit.

Want Even More Time?

If you’re planning a big moment like an extended family session, branding shoot, or want the full storytelling experience, a full session might be the way to go. These include even more time, images, and flexibility to tell your family’s story deeply and beautifully.
